Electric vehicles (EVs) are not a modern invention; their origins date back to the late 19th century. Early electric carriages offered a quiet, clean, and smooth ride compared to steam-powered vehicles, which emitted coal dust and soot, or gasoline cars, which were noisy and difficult to start. In the early 1900s, electric cars gained popularity in cities, and fleets of electric taxis began operating in New York and other metropolitan hubs.
Despite their early success, electric cars experienced a swift decline by the 1920s. Several factors contributed to this shift. The mass production of cheap internal combustion vehicles, pioneered by Henry Ford, made gasoline cars affordable for average citizens. Concurrently, the discovery of vast crude oil reserves made petrol extremely cheap. Furthermore, the expansion of the highway system created a demand for longer-range transport that early battery technology could not support.
Interest in electric propulsion was renewed in the late 20th century, spurred by growing environmental awareness and rising oil prices. In response to automotive emissions, regulations such as the Clean Air Act were implemented, forcing automakers to explore alternative fuels. The launch of mass-market hybrid cars like the Toyota Prius in the late 1990s served as a crucial bridge, familiarizing the public with gasoline-electric drivetrains before pure EVs returned.
Today, the EV industry is in a phase of rapid expansion. Breakthroughs in lithium-ion chemistry have drastically increased battery energy density and driving range. Automakers like Tesla popularized high-performance EVs, and traditional companies have followed suit. Many countries have now committed to phasing out internal combustion engine sales by 2035, cementing the electric vehicle's place in the future of transport.
